Amitiza® (lubiprostone) is a prescription medication approved to treat certain bowel movement problems. In particular, the drug can help treat chronic idiopathic constipation in men and women, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in women (it has not been shown effective for treating this condition in men). As with any medicine, side effects can occur with Amitiza. Some of the common side effects seen with this drug include diarrhea, headaches, and nausea. Prior to taking Amitiza, talk to your healthcare provider about your medical history and any other medicines you are taking, including vitamins and herbal supplements.
