Is Amitiza Safe for Breastfeeding Women?

It is not known if Amitiza^® (lubiprostone) passes through breast milk in humans. However, the manufacturer recommends that women not take the drug while breastfeeding.

 

What Does the Research Say?

No research has been done to see if Amitiza passes through breast milk or if it would cause problems in a breastfed infant. This lack of information may be quite frustrating for women who are breastfeeding. However, there are very good reasons why many medications are not thoroughly studied in women who are nursing. In most situations, these types of studies are considered unethical, as they could put infants (who cannot consent to these studies themselves and who would not directly benefit from the medication) at risk. In general, most information about breastfeeding and medications is obtained through cases outside of formal clinical studies.
