Bentyl Uses

Bentyl is used for relieving the painful spasms associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It is an antispasmodic medication that is not approved for use in children or teenagers. Healthcare providers may sometimes prescribe the drug "off-label" for other conditions. Off-label Bentyl uses include the treatment of bladder problems caused by bladder muscle spasms and bedwetting, among other things.

What Is Bentyl Used For?

Bentyl^® (dicyclomine hydrochloride) is a prescription medication that has been approved to treat irritable bowel syndrome (also known as IBS).

IBS is a disorder that interferes with the normal functions of the colon (large intestine). Irritable bowel symptoms include:

Crampy abdominal (stomach) pain
Bloating
Constipation
Diarrhea.

IBS can be affected by many things, including your diet and stress (see Stress and Irritable Bowel Syndrome) or other emotions. In addition to medication, avoiding certain foods (see IBS Diet) or stressful situations may help relieve symptoms of IBS.

How Does Bentyl Work?

Bentyl is part of a group of medications known as antimuscarinics or anticholinergics. It works by blocking specific receptors (called muscarinic receptors) in the smooth muscles of the digestive tract, which helps relieve the painful spasms associated with IBS. For this reason, Bentyl is also known as an antispasmodic medication.

Bentyl Use in Children or Teens

Bentyl is not approved for use in children or teens. Talk with your child's healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of using the drug in these age groups. In any case, Bentyl should never be used in infants younger than six months old.
