Bentyl Warnings and Precautions

Specific Precautions and Warnings for Bentyl

Some warnings and precautions to be aware of prior to taking Bentyl include the following:

  • The medication can decrease your ability to sweat, which may increase your risk of heat stroke. Be sure to stay well hydrated and try to avoid excessive heat.

  • Bentyl can slow down the digestive system. This can cause problems, especially for people who already have a slow digestive system due to ulcerative colitis or other problems.

  • If you have liver or kidney disease, you may require extra monitoring by your healthcare provider and may need to take a lower Bentyl dosage.

  • Bentyl can potentially interact with many other medications (see Bentyl Interactions).

  • This medication can cause blurred vision, dizziness, and drowsiness. Make sure you know how Bentyl affects you before driving or operating heavy machinery.

  • Let your healthcare provider know if you experience severe constipation, as this may be a sign of a blockage of the digestive tract. Sometimes, diarrhea can also be a symptom of this problem.

  • Medications like Bentyl can sometimes cause psychotic mental changes, such as hallucinations. Let your healthcare provider know if you develop any mental changes while taking this drug.

  • Bentyl should never be given to infants younger than six months old, as serious side effects and deaths have occurred.

  • Bentyl is considered a pregnancy Category B medication. This means that it probably will not cause problems if used during pregnancy, although the full risks are not currently known (see Bentyl and Pregnancy).

  • Bentyl passes through breast milk and may decrease the milk supply. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or plan to start, discuss this with your healthcare provider prior to taking the drug (see Bentyl and Breastfeeding).
