In order to help ensure safe treatment with Bentyl, warnings and precautions for the drug should be reviewed with your healthcare provider. It is important to know that Bentyl could slow down the digestive system, cause psychotic mental changes, and interact with certain medications. Precautions and warnings with Bentyl also apply to people who are breastfeeding, have gastrointestinal obstruction, or have severe ulcerative colitis.

What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider Before Taking Bentyl?

You should talk with your healthcare provider prior to taking Bentyl^® (dicyclomine hydrochloride) if you have:

Liver disease, such as liver failure, cirrhosis, or hepatitis
Kidney disease, such as kidney failure (renal failure)
Difficulty passing urine
A bowel blockage (bowel obstruction)
Ulcerative colitis
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Significant bleeding
Glaucoma
Myasthenia gravis
Autonomic neuropathy (nerve disease that affects involuntary bodily functions)
An overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
High blood pressure (hypertension)
Heart disease
Congestive heart failure (CHF)
A hiatal hernia
An enlarged prostate (also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH)
A rapid heart rate (tachycardia)
Any allergies, including allergies to food, dyes, or preservatives.

Also, let your healthcare provider know if you:

Will be having cataract surgery
Are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
Are breastfeeding.
