Large meals can cause cramping and diarrhea, so eating smaller meals more often or eating smaller portions should help improve the symptoms of IBS.
 
It may also help if your meals are low in fat and high in carbohydrates. Examples of low-fat, high-carbohydrate foods include:
 
  • Pasta
  • Rice
  • Whole-grain breads and cereals
  • Fruits
  • Vegetables.
     
Finally, drinking six to eight glasses of plain water a day will be an important part of your diet, especially if you have diarrhea. However, drinking carbonated beverages or those with caffeine, such as sodas, coffee, or tea, may result in gas and cause discomfort.
