Linzess Side Effects
You may develop diarrhea, abdominal (stomach) pain, or other side effects while taking Linzess. Fortunately, most people tolerate this medicine well and if reactions occur, they tend to be minor and easy to treat. However, because there are potentially serious side effects that may also occur, such as severe diarrhea or bloody stools, let your healthcare provider know if you develop anything that doesn't seem right.
An Introduction to Linzess Side Effects
As with any medicine, Linzess™ (linaclotide) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in many cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Linzess. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)
Common Side Effects of Linzess
Linzess has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, one group of people received the real medication, while another group was given a placebo (a "sugar pill" with no active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the placebo.
In these studies, the most common side effects of Linzess included:
- Diarrhea -- in up to 20 percent of people
- Abdominal (stomach) pain -- up to 7 percent
- Gas -- up to 6 percent
- Upper respiratory tract infection, such as the common cold -- up to 5 percent
- Headache -- up to 4 percent
- Stomach flu -- up to 3 percent
- Bloating or fullness in the stomach (distention) -- up to 3 percent
- Sinus infection -- up to 3 percent.
Other common side effects, occurring in 1 percent to 2 percent of people, included:
- Heartburn or indigestion
- Stool incontinence.
