Lotronex and Breastfeeding

Although it is unknown if Lotronex (alosetron) passes through breast milk, it is thought that it would to some extent. Because of the potentially dangerous side effects that might occur in a nursing infant, the manufacturer of the drug recommends that women use Lotronex with caution while breastfeeding. Before taking this drug while nursing, talk to your healthcare provider about the potential risks.

Can Breastfeeding Women Take Lotronex?

At this time, it is unknown if Lotronex® (alosetron hydrochloride) passes through breast milk in humans. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding a child or plan to start, you should talk with your healthcare provider before taking Lotronex.

More Information on Lotronex and Breastfeeding

In animal studies, Lotronex was shown to pass through the breast milk of rats. However, it has not been studied in breastfeeding women. Therefore, it is not known whether the drug passes through human breast milk, or if it would harm a nursing child.
Based on the properties of the medication, it is expected to pass through breast milk to some extent. However, each dose of Lotronex is cleared from the body relatively quickly. This suggests that the actual amount of drug found in breast milk would likely be small.
Even so, Lotronex has been reported to cause serious and life-threatening bowel side effects. Until more information is available, the potential risk for these side effects to occur in a nursing child cannot be ruled out.
The manufacturer of Lotronex recommends that it be used with caution in breastfeeding women. Other experts recommend that the drug should probably not be used in breastfeeding women at all because of the potential for serious problems if Lotronex does pass through breast milk to a nursing child.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should discuss breastfeeding and Lotronex use with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
