Irritable Bowel Syndrome Home > Bentyl Side Effects
Clinical studies showed that blurred vision, dry mouth, and dizziness were the most common side effects reported with Bentyl. Side effects of the medication are mild in most cases and either do not require medical attention or can be treated easily. However, certain side effects of Bentyl should be reported to a healthcare provider immediately, including fainting, severe constipation, and difficulty passing urine.
As with any medicine, side effects are possible with Bentyl® (dicyclomine hydrochloride). However, not everyone who takes the medication will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Bentyl. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of Bentyl side effects with you.)
Bentyl has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occur in a group of people taking the drug are documented and are then compared to side effects that occur in another group of people not taking the medicine. This way, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine.
In these studies, the most common side effects of Bentyl included:
- Dry mouth -- in up to 33 percent of people (see Bentyl and Dry Mouth)
- Dizziness -- up to 29 percent
- Blurred vision -- up to 27 percent
- Nausea -- up to 14 percent
- Lightheadedness -- up to 11 percent
- Drowsiness -- up to 9 percent
- Weakness -- up to 7 percent
- Nervousness -- up to 6 percent.
Other possible side effects included:
- Loss of taste
- Loss of appetite
- Tingling or numbness
- Speech problems
- Double vision
- Dilated (wide open) pupils
- Decreased sweating
- Nasal congestion
- Impotence (erectile dysfunction or ED).
