Irritable Bowel Syndrome Home > Zelnorm Information

In clinical studies, Zelnorm® (tegaserod maleate) was shown to be an effective treatment for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Specifically, this prescription medicine helped improve cases of IBS with constipation. However, this is not the only use for Zelnorm. This medication is also approved to treat chronic idiopathic constipation, which is constipation that occurs for no apparent cause and lasts at least six months.

Zelnorm comes in tablet form and is usually taken by mouth twice a day before meals on an empty stomach. To ensure your safety with Zelnorm, make sure your healthcare provider has up-to-date information on any other drugs you are taking, including vitamins and supplements, as well as any allergies you may have, including to medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives. Also, let your healthcare provider know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
