Zelnorm Uses

Chronic Idiopathic Constipation
Zelnorm is approved as a chronic idiopathic constipation treatment. Chronic constipation is constipation lasting at least six months. Idiopathic constipation means constipation not due to other diseases or drugs. Before you are diagnosed with chronic idiopathic constipation, your healthcare provider will make sure your problems are not due to one of the causes of constipation, such as other diseases or medications.

Symptoms of constipation include bowel movements that are less frequent and hard bowel movements. People with constipation sometimes need to strain to produce a bowel movement, and they sometimes feel that the bowel movement was incomplete. Constipation often causes feelings of abdominal pain (or stomach pain) and bloating.

When Zelnorm is used for chronic idiopathic constipation, it helps provide relief of constipation and the pain and bloating associated with constipation.

Zelnorm has not been shown to provide constipation relief in people ages 65 and older with chronic idiopathic constipation, and it is not approved for this use.

How Does Zelnorm Work?

Zelnorm works by stimulating certain serotonin receptors in the digestive tract. This helps the muscles of the digestive tract to move food through more quickly, relieving constipation. Zelnorm also helps to make the nerves in the digestive tract less sensitive, leading to decreased feelings of pain and bloating. While Zelnorm can help relieve irritable bowel syndrome symptoms, it is not a cure for IBS, and the IBS symptoms may return after you stop taking Zelnorm.

Zelnorm Uses in Children

Zelnorm has not been adequately studied in children. Zelnorm is not approved for treating constipation in children or infant constipation. You can talk with your healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of using Zelnorm in children.
